THROUGH THE TUNNEL AND BEYOND
Laying down on the bed, I closed my eyes allowing myself to slowly drift away.
Loosing touch with the everyday world, seeking to find something else that I
knew existed. Into a dark tunnel I carefully went. With each step my heart
pounded more. I had to find out if it was out there, the existence of something
different than this world.
As I traveled further into this tunnel, I began to realize that there may be no
turning back. Looking ahead there was only darkness. I turned to look behind me,
and with fright I looked into more darkness. I had succeeded in drifting away
from a former life, but exactly where I was now I had no clue. The silence
within this place was eerie. The pounding of my heart supplied the only noises I
was to hear. For a few moments I stood perfectly still gazing out into a sea of
black as if I were in a trance.
I shook the feeling, trying desperately to regain possession of my thoughts. I
decided to continue forward, moving slowly with guarded steps, advancing further
into this unknown place. I tried to remind myself that this journey had been
begun by my own choosing. Fleeing everything and everyone around me. Suddenly I
lost my footing and fell. As I tried to stand up I found that I was on a slope
and lost my balance. I began sliding, faster and faster I went. The wind seemed
to be swishing past me at incredible speed.
Using my arms and legs I tried
desperately to slow down and take control. This only added more complications as
I was now tossing about this way and that. I seemed to be caught in a force
drawing me toward it. The swirling continued. I became more and more dizzy,
unable to gauge the distance I had traveled or the speed. My head felt like it
was about to explode, my heart I knew was about to come out of my chest. Where
was I going, what awaited at the end. Was there an end to this madness?
Suddenly there appeared a thousand sparkling lights, pin dots against massive
black. It was amazing to see. At this point I had begun to slow down some. Then
like a crack of a whip, it all stopped. The spinning, the falling, the tumbling,
and the wind rushing by. I stood up and looking straight ahead I could see an
opening to the tunnel where light was filtering in. Shaking my head, getting my
bearings, I began walking toward the light. It grew brighter the closer I drew
near. As I walked out of the tunnel into the light I could not focus on
anything. I had no idea what might be there, or close to me. I closed my eyes
for a minute and then slowly opened them, allowing them to adjust from the
darkness to the light.
I could not believe what I was in my sight. A beautiful place that seemed to be
suspended in mid air. The grass was greener than any I had ever seen. Trees so
full of perfectly colored leaves for all seasons could be seen every where
standing tall. Running through this land was a little creek. The water was
crystal clear, and sparkling like perfectly cut diamonds. I bent down and cupped
my hands in the stream. I brought the water to my lips and took a sip. It's
purity was beyond anything imaginable. I saw birds that I never knew existed.
They were in brilliant hues that amazed the eyes. Their singing filled the air
with a melody so serene my ears strained to hear more and more. I saw exotic
flowers in full bloom, emitting a fragrance that was uplifting and refreshing as
I breathed in deeply. I walked over and picked one admiring it's beauty.
This place generated a warmth throughout my body and soul. In a few brief
moments it had calmed my fears and slowed my heart. I stood in awe of this
spectacular land floating in the sky. Was I in paradise? I ventured forward as I
felt the slight touch of a breeze that seemed to be guiding me. This place I
could have remained in for ever. Never had I felt so wonderful in my life. I
wanted this feeling that overwhelmed me to last an eternity.
Mesmerized by everything within my midst I stood allowing it all to seep in.
Just then a soft voice spoke to me. "You must go back, your time will come, but
it is not now." "But I do not want to leave!" I cried out. The voice again spoke
softly, saying, "You must, but take back the full essence of all you have seen
and experienced here. Carry it with you where ever you go, until it is time for
you to return."
As I started to speak again, I heard what sounded like a clap of thunder in the
distance. Suddenly, in the instance of the blinking of an eye, everything was
gone. There was a flash that caused me to close my eyes shielding against it's
brightness.
When I opened my eyes again, I saw I was home, sitting up on the side of my bed.
Just a dream I had.... I thought. Then I looked down to see in my hand was the
most unusual flower I had ever seen.
